Short answers to the fence questions we hear most in Tucson. Longer guides on cost, permits, repairs and neighbors are linked at the bottom of this page.
How deep should fence posts be set?
As deep as the fence height and the ground call for. Frost depth is not a concern in Tucson. A common rule of thumb is about a third of the post length below ground, with more for gate posts and for solid fences that take monsoon wind. Where caliche is in the way, the hole should go into or through it, not stop on top of it.
Should posts be set in concrete, gravel or foam?
Concrete is the standard here, and it is what we use for gate posts, corners and any solid fence. Caliche drains poorly, so water can sit at the bottom of a hole. For a wood post, a little gravel under it and a concrete top sloped away from the wood help. Foam sets quickly but we do not recommend it for gates or tall fences.
How long should I wait before staining a new wood fence?
Until the wood is dry enough to take the finish, which in Tucson comes sooner than in most places. Sprinkle water on a board. If it soaks in, the wood is ready. If it beads, wait. Do not leave new wood bare through a summer, because the sun starts to gray and crack it within months.
How much does it cost to stain or seal a fence?
There is no set price. It depends on the square footage, the product and how weathered the wood is. Ask us to list it separately on the estimate.
Can I use deck screws to fix loose pickets?
Yes, if they are exterior coated or stainless. Screws hold better than nails in boards that shrink and swell with the dry season and the monsoon. Drill a pilot hole near the end of an old board, because dry wood splits easily.
Can a faded vinyl fence be painted?
Yes, using a paint labeled for vinyl. Choose a light color. Dark paint absorbs heat, and in Tucson sun that can warp a panel. Wash off the chalky film first, and expect to repaint in the future.
I want a double gate for an RV or trailer but my posts are weak. Reinforce or rebuild?
Rebuild the posts. An RV gate is wide and heavy, and it needs its own steel posts set deep in concrete, often with a wheel or a center drop rod for support. In a block wall, part of the wall is cut out and new steel posts are set at each side of the opening. Check your HOA rules on RV gates and parking first.
Will a fence keep javelina, coyotes and snakes out?
It helps, but no fence is a guarantee. Javelina push under or through weak spots, so a tight, solid bottom edge matters most. Coyotes can jump or climb well, so height matters and nothing should be stacked against the outside. For rattlesnakes, people add fine mesh along the lower part of an open fence and close the gaps under gates. We can build those details in.
Does a new fence raise my property taxes?
That is a question for the Pima County Assessor's Office, which values property and improvements. A fence is a small item compared with the house.
